Clinton County Child Advocacy Center presents Cry Havoc! (One-Man Play) at the Strand Center
Over 23 million living veterans have been wired for war but never re-wired to come home. Cry Havoc!, an autobiographical one-person play by a military veteran, seamlessly interweaves Shakespeare’s most famous speeches with personal experience to help us understand the national crises we face when we fail in reintegrating our veterans. Stephan Wolfert, an Army Veteran, describes his personal journey and war story as an unconventional and brutally honest one. He is vulnerable and surprisingly able to remain good humored as he covers both the trauma he experienced in the military and before he served.
Mr. Wolfert is a puckish performer with a lithe build. Through his eyes we feel the terror of Fourth of July fireworks, the shock of sudden movements, the consolation of alcohol. Sometimes he offers sympathetic digressions from his own experience, like the tale of an African-American soldier in World War I or a discussion of the sexual assault of female soldiers.
Onstage, Mr. Wolfert leaps and prowls as he describes his experiences during the Persian Gulf war of 1991 and the post-traumatic stress that still dogs him. He remains concerned by the lack of services available to veterans struggling to make the transition to peacetime life.
The Clinton County Child Advocacy Center provides a child and adolescent-friendly space for victims and families involved in the investigations of child abuse. The goal is to provide a team, trauma informed approach to minimize short- and long-term effects. Cry Havoc! involves trauma, alcoholism, PTSD and lack of support for our veterans. Our community needs to commit to better outcomes for children, including supportive help for their parents and caregivers. In turn, their futures with be filled with opportunities and successes instead of more generational trauma.
